Choose a powerful story

The stories we tell ourselves shape our identity and determine our path and can either hold us back or propel us forward.

Tony Robbins shared an inspiring and insightful story on an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter about the late Steve Jobs. According to Robbins, Steve Jobs’ life serves as a profound example of how the stories we tell ourselves shape our identity and determine our path.

“Steve Jobs, what’s his history, what’s his story? His story was; he was born out of wedlock and I knew he was given up as a child but he was told by a neighbor girl that he was given up. And he is sitting on the grass crying his eyes out cause he knows he was given up – he was discarded. And he went - finally his parents saw he was crying and his parents were good soulful people. They didn’t have a bunch of resources, they had the ultimate resource…love. They loved this boy and they said you were not discarded, we chose you.”

Tony explained that we are defined by the stories we tell ourselves and we choose our truths. Given a choice Steve Jobs chose the story and the truth, “I’m chosen!”. Tony went on to say, “you’re biography is not your destiny, your decisions are”.
