In Puyallup, Two Strangers Kept a Heart Beating Until Help Arrived

On July 18, a man named Vincent went into cardiac arrest on a sidewalk in Puyallup, Washington. He was unresponsive. He was, in every measurable sense, gone.

Then a woman named Jackie saw him, dropped down, and started chest compressions. A young man named Ethan sprinted to grab an AED, brought it back, and helped keep him alive until Central Pierce Fire & Rescue arrived. Paramedics took over. Vincent survived.

This Wednesday, two months later, Vincent got to sit down across a table from the two strangers who kept his heart beating. Central Pierce Fire & Rescue posted photos of the reunion. Everyone was crying. Jackie and Ethan were each given the department's Citizen Lifesaving Award.

Here is the part that stops you. Ethan knew what to do because of a required health class. He learned CPR in a sports medicine course at Spanaway Lake High School, part of a Washington law on the books since 2013 that requires every district to teach CPR before graduation. A quiet decision made by lawmakers over a decade ago put a teenager on that sidewalk who knew exactly what to do.

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue logged 29 cardiac arrest survivors in 2025, nearly double the 15 they recorded in 2023. They credit better bystander training and faster dispatch pre-alerts, which shaved about 40 seconds off critical response times when they rolled out last spring. Every second in this math is a person still here.

Vincent is here because two strangers did not hesitate. And because a curriculum requirement said one of them had to learn.

Noemi "Emi" Vatavuk of Rusk, Texas, is three years old. When her mom Aiden had a seizure at home, Emi FaceTimed her grandparents near Atlanta, who called 911. Then Emi calmly talked with the dispatcher. She dragged a dining chair across the apartment so she could reach the lock, opened the front door for the paramedics, and waited outside with her cat Nemo until they arrived. UT Health East Texas EMS gave her a certificate of bravery, an EMS challenge coin, and a Build-A-Bear from the ambulance crew. Two wild horse foals were born on Kazakh soil for the first time in 200 years

Late in August, at a reintroduction center in the Altyn Dala State Nature Reserve, two Przewalski's horse foals were born on the steppe of central Kazakhstan. Both males. One to a mare named Tessa on August 22. One to a mare named Umbra on August 31. Same father, a stallion named Zorro, who did not live to see them. This is the first time wild horse foals have been born on Kazakh soil in over 200 years, after the species was hunted and squeezed off the steppe in the 1800s. Twenty-two adults were flown in over three years from Prague Zoo and Tierpark Berlin. "This is the proof of success of what we do," said the conservation director. The glowworms are back in North Yorkshire, thanks to a shed in Bristol

For the first time in about a century, glowworms are shining again in a North Yorkshire nature reserve called Nosterfield. The reason is a nearly zero-budget project run by an independent ecologist named Pete Cooper, who spent six years learning to rear glowworm larvae in a garden shed in Bristol before quietly driving them north for release. This summer, volunteers with the Lower Ure Conservation Trust counted up to 12 glowing females across several evenings, the first proof the beetles are living out their full life cycle at the site. Wisconsin researchers taught immune cells to eat solid tumors

Macrophages are the white blood cells whose whole job is to eat things. Dead cells. Damaged cells. Invaders. Their name comes from the Greek for "big eaters." But when they show up at a solid tumor, cancer cells wave a molecular sign that reads "don't eat me," and the macrophages, by nature polite, leave them alone.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health just found a way to disable the sign. Using CRISPR gene editing, Dr. Igor Slukvin's lab knocked out the receptor that reads the "don't eat me" message, then grew a renewable supply of these edited macrophages, which they call iMacs. Combined with a targeting antibody, the iMacs killed up to 90 percent of ovarian cancer cells and about half of melanoma cells in the lab dish. Better still, they stayed hungry through repeated encounters with tumors, where normal macrophages exhaust and quit.

The work, published this week in Molecular Therapy: Oncology, is early. Mouse results are more modest than the lab dish. But the shape of what could come is remarkable: an off-the-shelf cellular therapy for solid tumors that a hospital could pull from a freezer.
